In 2019, Petrus enrolled for a Bachelor of Education in Senior Primary Education (Honours) at UNAM's Katima Mulilo Campus, marking the start of his educational journey. It was also his first time living far from family. "The first two years were both exciting and challenging," he recalls, noting how the experience of independence became a catalyst for personal maturity. By 2020, the daily realities faced by students began to awaken something deeper in him a desire to serve and represent others. Motivated by the struggles many faced during registration and application seasons, Petrus found himself drawn into student leadership. He joined the Media Committee under the SRC's Secretary of Information and Publicity portfolio, where his new Canon D1200 camera became his storytelling tool. "I documented everything from events to incidents because I believed in giving visibility to student life," he shares.
In 2021, Petrus ran for SRC office and was elected unopposed as Secretary of Information and Publicity. In this role, he managed campus-wide communications and social media, published weekly articles, and led the production of the campus's flagship project the Yearly Newsletter. Determined to create deeper institutional impact, Petrus contested and won the position of SRC Vice President in 2022. His focus sharpened on student welfare and policy-level advocacy. "I wanted to do more than share information I wanted to be part of the solution," he reflects. From improving campus communication to amplifying student concerns to university management, Petrus stepped into a leadership role marked by action and accountability.
In 2023, he graduated with his Honours degree, a moment that marked not the end, but the launch of his career in education and civic responsibility. He moved to Windhoek in September to begin a short-term administrative contract at the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment (DNEA). During this time, he also launched his own community initiative the Khomas Schools Cleaning Campaign, promoting clean, safe learning environments in public schools. By 2025, he had transitioned to Pionierspark Primary School (PARKIES), where he now teaches Grade 7 Science.
Looking back, Petrus says the university's motto, "Open your mind," became a personal philosophy. "When I first registered, I did so with a half-open mind, uncertain of what to expect," he shares. "But through every challenge and opportunity, ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍømoulded me into someone who now approaches life fully open and prepared." Beyond academic content, the institution equipped him with leadership, character, and resilience, qualities he now brings into the classroom every day. "As a teacher, I encourage my learners to think critical resilience, qualities and face challenges with confidence," he says.

Ms. Joan P. Pohamba
Food Scientist
Redirections with Purpose: From White Coat Dreams to Feeding Nations
Joan Pashu Pohamba's journey is one of resilience, reinvention, and redemption. What began as a dream to wear a white medical coat transformed into a deeper calling to nourish her nation through science, innovation, and food security.
In 2005, Joan completed Grade 12 with a single-minded vision: to become a medical doctor. But when university admission letters arrived, she was placed on a waiting list for UNAM's Pre-Medical Training Programme, while receiving full admission to study Information Technology at the Polytechnic of Namibia (now NUST) a course far from her heart."It was never part of my dream, but with faith and a little courage, I walked into UNAM's Faculty of Health Sciences in 2006 with a waiting-list letter and a heart full of hope, "She recalls .By what she calls "the grace of God", Joan was accepted into the pre-med program. University, however brought unexpected challenges. Once her strongest subject, mathematics became confusing, physics and statistics were overwhelming. When she failed a physics module disqualifying her from continuing with pre-med, she felt her dreams crumble. "I felt like a failure," she recalls, but my father's unwavering belief in me kept me grounded."
In 2007, Joan made a defining pivot, registering under the Faculty of Science with majors in Molecular and Physiological Biology and Chemistry. It was in this new academic path that she uncovered a hidden passion. During her microbiology research at Namibian Breweries Ltd on food safety, and through a chemistry project extracting active compounds from aloe leaves, she found herself drawn to the science of food. "I even aced inorganic chemistry by dancing like electrons and protons in Prof. Kiremire's interactive classes," she laughs, adding that she learned best through movement, visuals, and creativity something that UNAM's hands-on teaching style encouraged.
After graduating in 2011, Joan became a Geochemistry Lab Technician at AREVA mine. When the uranium market crashed in 2012, she pivoted again, joining the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) as a Food Microbiologist, a role that immersed her in Namibia's food industry, from fisheries to dairy. She began to see a gap: while exported food had quality standards, local markets and indigenous foods lacked food safety and value addition systems. This realization ignited a purpose.
In 2019, she earned a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Master's in Nutrition and Food Sciences (Bioprocessing Systems) at Louisiana State University (LSU) one of just three Namibians selected that year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her research focused on creating a commercial prototype of Oshikundu, Namibia's traditional cereal-based drink, using global safety and preservation standards. During her studies, Joan was also diagnosed with dyslexia, finally explaining her unique learning style. "I embraced it", she states. What she once thought was a weakness became her greatest strength.
Her work caught global attention. In 2022, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) recruited her to lead national projects on food systems transformation, food fortification, safety, and malnutrition reduction. She spearheaded:
- The Agro-Food Expo
- Nutrition campaigns focused on the First 1000 Days of life
- Food preservation & value addition training for smallholder farmers
Today, Joan is a Food Scientist Consultant at Lesha Investments CC and the founder of Ileni Agrosolutions & Consultancy, a startup she birthed in her mother's kitchen in 2021 creating products like date chutney and Odjove salad dressing rooted in Namibian tradition. Her company's mission is clear, to provide food safety solutions, promote value addition technologies and elevate indigenous foods. "My journey, though filled with detours and delays, was never a mistake, I may not wear a white coat, but I carry a mantle of purpose bringing dignity, value and nourishment to my people." she states. Preserving Ancestral Rhythms: A Heart for Heritage and Education
Clare Sikopo's academic journey, commencing in 2016 with a Bachelor of Education Honours in English and Silosi at UNAM, was marked by extraordinary engagement. She wasn't just a student; she was a campus luminary. Clare embraced every facet of university life, serving as chairperson of the cultural group, excelling as SRC of Culture, proudly wearing the Miss ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍøsash, and even competing on the university's volleyball team. Her vibrant spirit touched everything from choir performances to environmental and educational clubs, forging a lasting legacy of leadership and active participation.
